Correspondence of Allen and his brother Calvin Durand Allen with family members while they were students at Lake Forest Academy, the Hill School, and Yale University, ca. 1906-1916; correspondence between Allen and his parents while he was serving in the 331st Artillery Regiment during World War I, and his correspondence with Charles C. Goodwin, a stock brokerage client, 1947-1957. Collection also includes routine correspondence between Allen and his wife Mary (Penfield) Allen while he served temporarily in 1942 as executive officer of the Rockford District of the Organized Reserves of Illinois. During World War I, Allen traces his training for military service at Fort Sheridan and Camp Grant, Illinois, and provides a detailed account of his experience as an officer. His regiment was part of the American Expeditionary Forces shipped to France and encamped near Bordeaux until the Armistice.
